Public Health in Nicaragua – January 2015 Info session

Nicaragua flag

Jon Kerr, Administrative Director with Interfaith Service to Latin America (ISLA), invites St. Olaf students to join him when he and other volunteer medical and public health professionals travel to Jalapa, Nicaragua in January 2015 to contribute to public health, education and construction projects.

This opportunity provides students interested in public health with an immersion in the health care system of Nicaragua. The experience will allow reflection on the American health care system and global health care issues. The later half of January in Nicaragua will follow two weeks of domestic shadowing of health care professionals, which individual student participants will set up independently.

The two weeks in Nicaragua will provide the opportunity to participate in public health care side by side with both American and Nicaraguan health care providers. Students will conduct public health surveys in local homes, coordinate health education within the schools and communities, observe clinic practices, work with the women’s health foundation along with other opportunities.
